Periodicals

The early history of American Catholic periodicals has been admirably written by Eugene Willging and Herta Hatzfeld (A155), both of the Catholic University of America. Unfortunately, the manner of its publication has not been equally admirable. The first series, dealing with states having very brief publishing histories, was printed as a series of articles in the Records of the American Catholic Historical Society beginning in September, 1954. The second series has been printed by Catholic University in a series of mimeographed parts, all of which are out of print.

Users of Catholic periodicals have been greatly aided since 1930 by The Catholic Periodical Index, now The Catholic Periodical and Literature Index (A160), published by the Catholic Library Association. If the Association did nothing else — and it has many other worthwhile projects — this work alone would be justification enough for its existence.
