Because of their wide scope and frequently brilliant contents, the encyclical letters of the modern popes from about the middle of the nineteenth century have been the subject of much study and publication. Texts of these documents may be found in Acta Sanctae Sedis (E121) and its successor Acta Apostolicae Sedis (E120). English translations have always been available in pamphlet form and in numerous collections, some of which are listed here.

Sister Claudia Carlen has done English-speaking papal scholars a great service by compiling her five-volume collection of modern encyclicals (E114). Here for the first time is a comprehensive and detailed index to these important documents.
