The first section or "volume" deals with each of the books of the Old Testament giving history, outlines and a very detailed commentary teeming with bibliographical references. The second section does the same for the New Testament and contains fifteen additional studies on general biblical topics. Catholic Biblical Quarterly termed this a "magnificent, monumental …commentary on the Bible… a successful blending of the contributions of fifty scholars into a moderate, modern, intelligently critical, comprehensively balanced companion to the Bible" (XXXI [July, 1969] , p. 405). The reviewer goes on, however, to criticize some sections for bland consensus scholarship and one-sidedness (pp. 407-08). Index of subjects and persons, but not of the bibliographies.
