Originally published in English, this work has appeared in German, Italian and French translations. In the English version, much emphasis is put on indicating the best modern translations of the authors in question. The work consists of biobibliographical essays on each of the Fathers, including anonymous writers, a general bibliographical introduction and essays on the history and background of the period. With the appearance of the first volume in 1950, the Catholic Library World remarked: "This is a monumental work of detailed scholarship giving new dimensions to the two series currently being published in this country: The Fathers of the Church (B155) and Ancient Christian Writers (B153). Invaluable for bibliographical data and indispensable for libraries with patristic holdings" (XXII [November, 1951], p. 60).
