Aims to "give precise definitions of theological terms and at the same time to provide a concise synthesis of Catholic doctrine in terms equally understandable to layman and the specialist" (Foreword). Bibliographical references are limited to Church documents, biblical texts, the Summa and one or two commentaries. Commonweal blamed it for deficiencies in cross references but compared it favorably to Rahner's Dictionary of Theology (B195) because of its objectivity (LXXXIII [February 25, 1966], p. 619).
