The "most complete and scholarly work" for questions on the ancient liturgies of the Church (O'Rourke [A74], p. 119). In addition to its general coverage of pre-Carolingian social and religious life, this work covers liturgical art, architecture, music, rites, and formulas in long, signed articles with copious bibliographies. Criticism of the work has usually been in the form of unequivocal praise for its scope and scholarly detail (e.g., Catholic Historical Review, XV [April, 1929], p. 119, and Month, CI [June, 1923], p.214).
