A guide to the daily liturgy explaining the meaning and history of each feast in terms of the mass and office for the day according to the pre-Vatican II liturgical year. Meditations and biographies of saints are also included. Each volume is arranged in two sections: the "Proper of the Seasons," i.e., Sundays and other movable feasts; and the "Proper of the Saints," feasts that fall on specific dates. This was a very widely used guide to the meaning of the liturgy by one of the authorities in the liturgical movement. Originally written in German, the translation has been highly praised (Books on Trial, XI [May, 1953], p. 287).
