One of the more recently published comprehensive works in this field. The three major parts are the Introduction générale, covering definitions, types of symbols, sources, etc.; Iconographie de la Bible, covering characters and stories; and Iconographie des Saintes, an alphabetical catalog of saints giving biographies, histories of their cults, descriptions and locations of representations in works of art, and bibliographies. Byzantine and Western, medieval and post-Reformation art are included. Although praised from an artistic point of view, one reviewer pointed out Réau's ignorance of some of the basic laws of the Church regarding the veneration of the saints (Clergy Review, XL [September, 1956], p. 567).
