Although criticized for general inadequacy, serious errors, and omissions (Catholic Historical Review, XXIII [January, 1938] , p. 500), this is the only unified attempt to chronicle the history of American Catholic education with any degree of comprehensiveness and scholarship. The bibliographies at the end of each chapter provide one of the few keys to the rather scarce literature in this field — even if they are outdated.

This work was based on the authors' two previous histories which are somewhat more detailed if older.
