Johnson, Douglas W. Churches and Church Membership in the United States: An Enumeration by Region, State, and County, 1971. Washington, DC, Glenmary Research Center, 1974. xiv, 237p. maps. LC 73-94224. ISBN 0-914422-01-4.

Consists of three tables: "Churches and Church Membership by Denomination in the U. S.," "… by Region, State, and Denomination," and "… by State, County, and Denomination." The survey is incomplete in that only 3 sects are listed (80% of Christians). Black churches and oriental religions are not included. A fold out map uses color codes to identify the major sect in each county of the U. S. The Glenmary Research Center was established in 1966 to serve the research needs of the Catholic Church in rural America. In 1971, in cooperation with the National Council of Churches and the Missouri Synod, the Center sponsored a nationwide study of religious activity. This work, (D101) and (D100) came out of that study.
