McCarthy, Thomas Patrick. Total Dedication for the Laity: A Guidebook to Secular Institutes. Boston, St. Paul Editions, 1964. 103p. il. LC 63-23366.

Secular institutes are "societies composed of priests, laymen or laywomen who have bound themselves under vows, oaths or promises to practice the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity and obedience for their own personal sanctification while exercising an apostolate of love for Christ within the world" (Preface). This directory explains the history, purposes, spiritual life, formation and entrance requirements for over twenty of these institutions established in the United States. A more up to date but less detailed listing may be found in (E194).
