This is a greatly expanded new edition of the 1953 work of the same title. Several thousands of monasteries, hospitals and secular colleges are identified. A brief history with references to documents and books is given along with numbers of monks or nuns and incomes at various times during the history of the house. The arrangement is alphabetical by the name of the house under the generic name of the religious order. There is a general index of monasteries as well as numerous appendices and a scholarly introduction by the author. (E200) and (E201) were undertaken to complete a definitive list of monastic establishments in the British Isles during the Middle Ages.
