Part of a projected guide to the literature of American Catholic History. It covers "the development that has taken place in this field with particular attention directed to the outstanding critical historians of the period" (Preface). The other parts of the series — a study of the literature of American Catholic Church history and a "select catalogue" of American Catholic Church literature — have never appeared, perhaps because the Guide by Ellis (E73) and Vollmar's Bibliography (E81) filled this need.
